SUBJECT: Food allergens in the products of Cascades Containerboard Packaging In answer to your request for information pertaining to the inclusion of potential food allergens in the products of Cascades supplied to your company, I am pleased to inform you that in our current processes, we do not intentionally add any of the following food allergens to our products:  milk  eggs  fish  Crustacea  tree nuts  wheat  peanuts  soybeans  gluten  sesame seeds  mustard Chemicals used in the manufacturing of our products and commonly used in the manufacture of paper could contain high modified substances issued from the by-product of the above-mentioned ingredients. For instance, surfactants used as processing aids are typically highly substituted fatty acids derived originally from vegetable or animal oils. These may include soybean or peanut oils. Some adhesives contain natural polymeric materials derived from soybean or milk proteins. These polymers have been chemically shortened and substituted to provide specific adhesive characteristics and water insolubility. Starch used in paper making and converting process could be made of wheat and contains minute amounts of wheat’s allergenic protein and gluten. They may be present in paper at trace levels. Majority of allergenic proteins of wheat are degraded during the highpressure cooking process of starch. Remaining proteins should be kept in paper by the surface sizing process, no migration is expected. To the best of Cascades knowledge, the potential transfer of gluten from paper to food is mathematically poor and under the quantity usually recognized as being tolerable for people suffering of gluten allergy according to American Celiac Disease Alliance. Although some of these chemical compounds may be found in the products supplied to you as a result of the use of recycled paper, they would not be expected to cause a food related allergic reaction due to the extensive chemical modifications and lack of expected migration.
