The refined cottonseed oil produces by PYCO Industries, Inc. is pure cottonseed oil; however, the PYCO Laboratory monitors the quality of the first refined cottonseed oil produced by the plant in order to determine the amount of citric acid to add to the oil prior to the bleaching process; this inclusion rate has generally been 30 to 50 ppm. A slurry mix of citric acid and bleaching clay is added to the oil in stream, the citric acid serving to activate the bleaching clay. This mix removes impurities such as any trace metals and chlorophyll that may be present in the oil by attaching to the impurity. The bleaching clay and undesirable impurities are removed with screens acting as filters in the bleaching unit. The refined and bleached cottonseed oil is then forwarded to the deodorizer for the final process of refining. An additional 30 to 50 ppm of citric acid are added to the refined, bleached, and deodorized cottonseed oil to protect the flavor and to act as an antioxidant to help preserve the quality of the oil during transit. Tertiary Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) and Dimethypolysiloxane (DMPS) are available to customers; however, these two additives are included only upon request by the customer. PYCO Industries, Inc. does not use or include Butylated HydroxyAnisole(BHA), a synthetic antioxidant, in their cottonseed oils.
