ALLERGEN STATEMENT - VEGETABLE OILS Refined, bleached and deodorized vegetable oils have been subjected to clinical challenge trials where allergic individuals were fed these oils and experienced no allergic reactions. The studies indicate that allergenic individuals react to protein fractions of oilseeds, rather than refined oils. In other words, the possible allergen threat exists in the protein portion of the oilseed or bean, and this proteinaceous material is removed after crushing the oilseed or bean. Crude oil from various beans or oilseeds may contain trace amounts of protein; however after the refining, bleaching and deodorizing processes, no detectable protein remains in the oil. Consequently, no potential allergen threat remains in the oil either. Oil supplies from the process commonly known as Cold Press may not remove all traces of protein, and therefore should not be consumed by persons with allergies to oilseed proteins. However, our RBD packaged soybean, corn, peanut, canola, sunflower, cottonseed, safflower, coconut, palm and almond vegetable oils are not from cold press extraction processes, and therefore have no detectable proteins. All studies located to date indicate that no allergenic reactions are likely when consuming fully refined, bleached and deodorized vegetable oils. This has been documented in Section 3 of the FDA’s Food Allergen Labeling & Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA), which states that “ Major Food Allergen DOES NOT include highly refined oils, even if derived from 1 of the 8 foods or food groups identified as a major food allergen (eggs, fish, milk, tree nuts, peanuts, soybeans, wheat or shellfish).” The Act further states that “consequently, highly refined oils are exempt from food allergen labeling”.
