Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon A.) are native to North America and grow on evergreen creeping shrubs that grow low to the ground. The shrubs produce tart berries which turn bright red when ripe. Harvest takes place by flooding the beds, corralling the floating cranberries together and collecting them.
Rich in phytonutrients, particularly proanthocyanidins, cranberries contain other phenolic compounds and carotenoids like ß-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin and flavonoids like quercetin. They are also a good source of vitamins C, E and K, B vitamins, as well potassium, manganese and copper.*
