Echinacea, also known as purple coneflower, belongs to the sunflower family. Echinacea means ‘spiny one’ (derived from Greek) and purpurea means 'reddish-purple'.
The most noted compounds in echinacea are polysaccharides, cyanidin glycosides, glycoproteins, polyacetylenes, alkylamides, alkaloids, cichoric acid, caffeic acid derivatives, essential oils and flavonoids such as nicotiflorin, rutin, rutoside, luteolin, kaempferol, quercetin, quercetagetin, apigenin and isorhamnetin.*
